This
is an attempt to include records of all the Powises who lived in and
between Shrewsbury and Wellington. The majority were coalminers at the
start of the industrial revolution, in the area we now know as the
Ironbridge Gorge, though a few, mainly in Shrewsbury, are from the gentry
probably only distantly related to the others.
Most
of the parishes quoted are in the area between Shrewsbury and Telford, now
connected by the A.5 and M 54. The main trade route for hundreds of years
was the River Seven.
Most
of the material is taken from the printed registers of the Shropshire
Parish Register Society. Some is taken from original material, some from
the Bishops Transcripts and some from the I.G.I.
The
material was in different formats in the different registers. I have
changed it to a common format; each event is in chronological order by
parish. Generally I have only indicated when the event is a marriage or a
death. Any event not specifically indicated is a baptism.
All
the entries are about individuals named Powis (or Powys, Powes etc) I
occasionally include the records of women who marry Powises, prior to the
marriage.
As
well as being a genealogical record, this list of several hundred people
is also a social history.
We
see Powises in the Civil War period titled Mr, the title for a gentleman;
two generations later their descendants were described as paupers.
Richard and Mary Powis have two children christened as Charles and
Elizabeth on 13th May 1660. A clear political gesture, as the
restoration of King Charles II occurred a few days later.
During the next century we see a decline in the variety of names given at
baptism.
In
the 1800’s we get another change with the entry of Methodism and religious
revivals in the Coalfield. There is a significant increase in the number
of different Christian names. We get a number of biblical names; at times
it seems the more obscure the better. We get a woman christened Progula
Wallet, she married Richard Powis as Procula Cadwallet, and her death
certificate names her as Peculiar Powis. Due to the glories of the
internet I discovered that her name came from Claudia Procula the wife of
Pontius Pilate.
By
the end of the 19th Century we see more variety in the pattern of
Christian names, probably an outcome of the arrival of literacy. Almost
250 years after Richard Powis names his children as a political gesture.
Benjamin Powis, a mechanic from Malinslea, names a son Baden Powell, on
the 8th April 1900. Sadly two of his grandsons paid a higher
price, than a patriotic gesture; they appear on the
Commonwealth War Graves list, killed in World
War One.
